DRA Announces New York Office Relocation and Expansion

“To accommodate new growth, better serve our clients, and ensure all New Yorkers have equal opportunities, DRA is moving to a new, expanded office on 42nd street.” –Michelle Caiola

On Friday, March 2nd, DRA will relocate its New York City office to a new building that will allow for further expansion as the nonprofit legal center grows. The new building is located at 655 Third Ave., right across the street from the current offices. (The full address is 655 Third Ave, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10017.)

Sid Wolinsky, Founder and Managing Director of DRA, said: “We’ve been looking to expand DRA’s New York operations for some time now.  This new space will allow DRA to hire more attorneys and take on more cases. New York City still has a long way to go to ensure equal rights and opportunity for people with all types of disabilities. This expansion will enable DRA to continue our reform of New York’s systems and practices that discriminate against people with disabilities.”

DRA, founded in 1993, opened its New York office in 2010 with one attorney and generous community support.  Since 2010, DRA has achieved impressive victories including: a new elevator in the Dyckman Street subway station; captioning in AMC theatres across the state; an emergency preparedness plan that protects disabled residents when disasters strike; a taxi fleet that will go from 2% to 50% accessible by 2021; and polling places made accessible so that everyone can exercise their free and independent right to cast their vote.

Despite these victories, numerous barriers to full participation in New York City remain for people with disabilities.  With expanded staff and offices, DRA will tackle challenges including the City’s broken sidewalks, inaccessible civic centers, healthcare facilities, public transportation systems and more.
