Tess Dekker is a rising 3L at the University of Michigan Law School. Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Tess received her B.S. in Deaf Studies and B.A. in Linguistics from Boston University in 2022. At Michigan, Tess serves as the Membership Coordinator for the Michigan Journal of Gender & Law, Co-President of the ACLU at Michigan Law, Communications Chair for the Women Law Students Association, and Co-Chair of the First Year Information Program, an initiative which seeks to provide mentorship opportunities for incoming 1Ls. In the coming year, Tess is excited to begin as a Student Attorney with Michigan Law’s Civil Rights Litigation Initiative clinic, where she will work for clients with disabilities whose civil rights have been violated.

As a passionate advocate for communication access, Tess spent her 1L summer as a Legal Intern for the Deaf Services Team at Disability Rights Maine, the state’s Protection and Advocacy Agency. At DRM, Tess concentrated primarily on providing legal redress to D/deaf and hard of hearing clients that had been, or were being, denied access to effective communication. She also gained experience in the realm of Special Education Law. At Disability Rights Advocates, Tess is eager to spend this summer broadening her experience in different areas of disability justice and developing the skills needed to serve as an effective impact litigator for people with disabilities.
